Experience the Magic of Lady Susan Wood in Kenya
Experience the Magic of Lady Susan Wood in Kenya

Overview

Seeking a way to to provide gainful employment for single mothers, Susan Wood founded Kazuri (Swahili for small and beautiful), a bead factory, at the bottom of her garden in Karen, outside Nairobi. Today Kazuri beads employs over 200 women and exports to store in six countries, including Harrods of London.  There are many charitable organizations and NGOs in Kenya, but those which create meaningful and profitable jobs are without doubt the most impactful.

This vacation is for those who seek cultural exchange and want to get to know, and help, local Kenyan women, as well as see other such projects in action.

After 2 nights in Nairobi and a day tour including a visit to Kazuri Beads, as well as other women-focused points of interest, guests will head to Amboseli for a three day safari in one of Kenya’s most game rich and scenic National Parks.  After these wonderful wildlife encounters, travel to Machakos to volunteer on the shambas (market gardens) of single Kenyan women who make their living selling produce at the local market. These women are part of a bi-country organization and are raising money for their own water catchment system.  It will be hard to leave these inspiring women, for the safari in nearby Amboseli National Park, but the friendships forged and the memories made, will last forever.

The catchment system water will be clean and parasite free. Kenya’s two rainy seasons will ensure that the tanks are always full. Accommodation in a local guesthouse is very simple, and the work can be demanding. (B,L,D)
