Because France is such a large and diverse country, we have listed several basic and regional itineraries from which to choose or combine for a longer trip. To meet the time requirements of these schedules, you must rent a car (you can see the areas using buses and trains, but you'll need to allow much more time). If you're taking an escorted tour, be sure that it includes as many of these cities/areas as possible.

9-Day Itinerary
The absolute minimum first visit to France should be nine days and we recommend the following itinerary.
Day 1—Arrive in Paris.
Days 2-4—Paris and/or a day trip to Versailles.
Day 5—Depart Paris through the Burgundy area to Lyon.
Day 6—Drive through Provence, Orange and Avignon to Nimes.
Day 7—Morning tour of Nimes, continuing on to Nice or one of the quaint towns on the Riviera such as St. Tropez, Antibes or Frejus in the afternoon.
Day 8—Riviera.
Day 9—Depart France.
15-Day Itinerary
In order to get a better understanding of France, we suggest a minimum of two weeks:
Day 1—Arrive in Paris.
Days 2-4—Paris and/or a day trip to Versailles.
Day 5—Drive through Normandy and overnight at Mont-Saint-Michel.
Day 6—Drive to Angers and tour the city.
Day 7—Drive to Tours. Spend the day at one of the chateaus—Amboise, Chambord or Chenonceau—and tour the surrounding area.
Day 8—Return late to Paris, possibly staying on the southeast side to get an earlier start the next morning.
Day 9—Depart Paris through the Burgundy area for Vezelay.
Day 10—Drive through the Vallee de Cousin to Avallon and on to Dijon or Beaune.
Day 11—Drive to Lyon.
Day 12—Drive through Provence, Orange and Avignon to Nimes.
Day 13—Morning tour of Nimes, continuing on to Nice or one of the quaint towns on the Riviera such as St. Tropez, Antibes or Frejus in the afternoon.
Day 14—Riviera.
Day 15—Depart France.
18-Day Itinerary
Another variation that puts more emphasis on history and scenery would add the following to the original nine-day itinerary. We recommend that you throw in a few rest days.
Days 1-8—Same as in first itinerary.
Day 9—Drive via Arles and Nimes to Montpellier.
Day 10—Drive through Carcassone to Toulouse.
Day 11—Continue to Lourdes.
Day 12—Spend day in Lourdes area.
Day 13—Continue via Pau (this route has the most beautiful scenery) to Biarritz or another town in the area.
Day 14—See the Basque area.
Day 15—Drive to Bordeaux.
Day 16—Continue on to Tours.
Day 17—Drive into Paris.
Day 18—Depart France.
