Highlights Of The Bahamas

As we’ve written before, nothing says beach getaway like the Caribbean. And right alongside places like Jamaica, Cozumel, and the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas exemplifies what people love about this delightful little corner of the world. While some parts of this island nation are a little more developed and commercialized than smaller Caribbean destinations, the Bahamas still offers a unique brand of beauty and serenity. It’s just that it’s all enhanced with plenty of attractions and amenities for tourists as well.

Ardastra Gardens

These are some of the highlights of the country to enjoy if and when you’re able to make the trip.

Ardastra Gardens

So much attention is paid to beaches and resorts in the Bahamas, the fact that there’s a garden center that doubles as a zoo on the islands might surprise a lot of people. But Ardastra Gardens is a very real attraction, and one that a lot of travelers find they can’t get enough of. It’s the first and only zoo in the Bahamas, and features an incredible array of animals (highlighted by various tropical birds). It’s actually a very interesting collection, because while you won’t necessarily see some of the big game or safari animals frequently housed at other zoos, you’ll see animals that fit the climate, from jaguars and lemurs to macaws and flamingos.

Dean’s Blue Hole

You may well have heard of Dean’s Blue Hole. It’s the second-deepest saltwater blue hole in the world, and really makes for a remarkable sight. Enclosed on three sides by rocks and on the fourth by a sort of beach/sandbar, it’s become a popular spot for tourists, as well as the occasional diver or snorkeler. There isn’t too much sea life in the area, though there are some fish and turtles that come in from the ocean to escape the surf.

Atlantis Resort

Atlantis Resort

If you’re not staying at the Atlantis Resort (and enjoying its water park, luxury rooms, dining, etc.), the main attraction is its casino. A lot of travelers might believe that casinos can no longer define destinations thanks to the prevalence and variety of games online. It’s true that internet casinos offer a greater variety, as well as special prizes, bonus features for new customers to entice them to join, and all kinds of other incentives. But there’s still something special about the real thing, particularly in a tropical environment. Atlantis offers a big, pretty, jingling, inviting casino just steps from the beach, and is certainly one of the highlights.

Pig Beach

Pig Beach might not sound like the ideal Caribbean getaway, but it’s one of the more unique attractions in the Bahamas. Perhaps most importantly, it brings you to the Exumas, which are basically a chain of mini-islands stretching out into the sea and looking, in a pleasant way, like the ends of the Earth. The main draw, however, is the pigs that inhabit Pig Beach near Big Major Cay. They paddle out to greet you like a jolly bunch of golden retrievers and, putting it simply, you can go swimming with them in the shallow waters!

Pink Sands Beach

Pink Sands Beach

There are more famous beaches in the Bahamas, but as is only natural, most of them have become major tourist hubs. Pink Sands Beach is a little bit more secluded. Located on Harbour Island, it’s a calm, straightforward stretch of beach, with the same gorgeous waters and general climate, and mysteriously pink-hued sand. For a seaside walk or just a relaxing afternoon, there’s no place better.
